Firstly, I would like to say thank you to our wonderful community for supporting us as our classroom programmes finished a little earlier a couple of weeks ago to allow our teachers to attend a NZEI union meeting. One of the topics discussed was the concern we are facing in education, especially here in Te Tai Tokerau, with the lack of new teachers entering our profession. Unfortunately, here in Whangarei this year, there has not even been enough applicants to have an intake of first year beginning teacher trainees. This makes me wonder what this will look like here in three years time as we often employ and support beginning teachers in our kura. I believe teaching is an amazing, rewarding profession and that we are very privileged to be able to share in the learning journeys of our tamariki so I really hope this situation will start to change.
This week I would like to acknowledge our wonderful office team Ngaire Olley, Amber Percy and Megan Davidson. Ngaire leads this team and has been at our kura for 30 years. The office team are the first people you will meet if you are new to our school or if you are popping in during the school day. People often comment to me how friendly, knowledgeable and helpful our office team are and I certainly agree with this! We are so lucky to have such a capable, kind and considerate office team and I know as a staff we really appreciate what they do for us all.
Next term, we will be opening a new New Entrant class in Room 5. Sharon Whyte and Angela Lewis will teach the class. Sharon has worked at our kura for many years and Angela was also a teacher here a few years ago. We look forward to having them as part of our Teina Team.
I hope everyone has a wonderful break over the next two weeks and we look forward to seeing you all again next term.
